Dan’s story

v2 Dan CC

After feeling stuck in a rut, Dan turned to Chat Central in search of a fresh perspective and gained a new outlook on life. We’re so proud of Dan and the progress he has made. Our Engagement Officer Celia Monaghan caught up with Dan recently. Read their conversation here:

What made you join Chat Central?

To build up my confidence, make friends, be more active. Before I joined Chat Central I was staying indoors 24/7 and was just being depressed.

How did you hear about the project?

I found out about Chat Central through the Mind Wellbeing Hub at Wellington Gardens.

Can you remember how you felt getting ready to come to your first session?

I was a bit nervous, had a bit of anxiety and then I got there and realised it would be good to be more active.

What were your first sessions like?

They were at Pool at Rileys [sports bar] .  I enjoyed it.  Getting out meeting new people, it was fun, but I was nervous at the same time.

What different activities have you done with Chat Central?

I played lots of pool, darts, I’ve done crafts, Tai Chi.  At some sessions I was too tired to join in, but I turned up to be around people.

How has being part of Chat Central helped you?

It changed my life to be fair. I’m getting out a lot more, being active, socialising with people.  It’s a whole different, fresh me, I guess.

Can you tell us about volunteering with Chat Central?

We went on a group volunteering session to Team Springboard at Lakeview Allotments.  I really enjoyed myself, getting to learn new things and what they do and ever since then I’ve been going back to the allotment each week.  It’s changed my mental health a lot.  I’m getting out a lot more then I was.  I like being out in nature, hearing the birds tweet.  I’ve met some decent people who I’ve become friends with.  As a result of Chat Central and finding the allotment I’ve made lots of friends.  I feel better in myself than I was doing before.  I wake up in the morning with a smile on my face, realising there’s something out there for me, for me to do.  Before Chat Central I would wake up feeling depressed and not wanting to do anything and I would put depressing music on, compared to now when I wake up with a cheeky grin on my face and put happy music on.

Would you recommend Chat Central to anyone else? Why?

I would say if you’re struggling with your mental health, anxiety, depression, do sign up with Chat Central.  They help you a lot and you get to meet new people, you’re socialising more and build new friendships.
